Weather Plan for Saturday

FROM THE KISL BOARD 1/20-2pm

Good afternoon,

As most of y’all have heard, there is the chance for some winter weather this weekend.

I wanted to assure you all that the KISL Board is in frequent communication with UT, KCS, and a variety of meteorologists from the area.

At this time, this system is still too far out for any accurate prediction to be made. While some models are showing the potential for 12+ inches of snow, others have changed that value to 2” and the presence of freezing rain.

On the positive side, there is currently no model showing an impact on Friday’s diving competition, so that should occur as planned.

As a Board, we are able to make changes and decide on the swim meet as late as Friday afternoon without any issues for setup or meet management. However, we are under any limitations that might be placed by the University (even if right before the meet is scheduled to begin) that could impact any plans we make.

Current plan and options:

Option 1: Meet as Planned

Still a possibility and our preference

Option 2: Late Afternoon Conditions Unsafe

In this event, we would set up the HS session as a timed final event (same as MS). Heats and Lanes would reflect this change and athletes would be seeded for timed finals and not circle seeding. This would mean our schedule would change to just 2 sessions and athletes would swim their event one time instead of prelims and Top 16 Finals.

Option 3: Models show Saturday is unsafe/UT Closes Saturday

If this were to occur, then the weather is going to be so significant that the weekend would not be a possibility for a meet on Saturday or Sunday. In this event, we are working with UT to do the meet the following weekend on Sunday (there is a UT meet on Saturday). Additionally, I have already started communicating with other region directors, TISCA, and NAC to try to shift entry deadlines for impacted schools to beyond that weekend. If that happens, entries would be accepted as planned and then corrections later. THIS HAS NOT BEEN A FINALIZED PLAN.

Last, I have had folks reach out about the chance of a Last Chance Meet. I have been in communication and planning with UT, but this storm may throw a rather large wrench into that plan. As of now, any Last Chance Meet is placed on hold pending this weekend.

Long email short, the KISL Board is doing everything that we can to have the best and safest KISL Championship meet as we can.

Please look for future updates as the weather predictions improve, or if UT makes a decision that could impact the meet.
